Technical analysis differs from the methods and assessment tools used by fundamental analysis. Technical analysts, also called chartists, track the price movements of a stock. From a review of charts and patterns formed by price movements--created by supply and demand in the market--technical analysts form opinions about the price direction, support and resistance levels of a stock. Traders employ technical analysis techniques to identify actively trading stocks. Fundamental analysis may better serve the needs of long-term investors.
A financial analyst reviews her client's portfolio. She reviews technical charts of the stocks in the portfolio. She notes that one stock position seems to show a clear downward trend. Checking the fundamental financial information about the company, she notices that a sell-side analyst has recently placed a "hold" on the company's shares. She makes a note to discuss the position with her client. She may recommend outright sale or hedging the position to buffer any additional price declines.
