Jordan`s first shale oil-fueled power plant to start operating in 2018
Construction for the first shale oil-fuelled power plant in Jordan will be done at the end of 2018, the Ministry of Energy said this week.
The 470 megawatts capacity plant will account for 15% of Jordan’s overall electricity capacity of 3,200MW.
The $2.2 billion plant will use Jordan’s massive reserves of shale oil estimated at nearly 10 billion tonnes, according to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammed Hamed in a press release on Wednesday.
The facility will help the government slash its deficit by a notable margin; with estimates it will reduce the country’s energy bill by $500 million per year, as the electricity produced by the facility will be bought at half the current price.
The plant will also help reinforce the country’s efforts to reduce energy imports.
